About.

Briahnna Brown is a writer/editor with GW Today, the primary news source for the George Washington University community. Born and raised in Baltimore, Briahnna has experience working as a daily news reporter as well as a freelance journalist. Prior to working for GW Today, Briahnna wrote for The Northern Virginia Daily on the “crime and courts” beat, covering everything from daily arrests to multi-day criminal trials.

She is an alumna of Howard University where she studied journalism, and is currently pursuing a Master of Arts from George Washington University in media and strategic communication and a graduate certificate in nonprofit management. While pursuing her graduate education, Briahnna produced a number of advocacy communications campaigns, including one to end solitary confinement for children imprisoned in Pennsylvania.

Briahnna’s educational experience has afforded her a clear understanding of the complexities within this industry, and she is still very active in preparing for her future.

She has experience writing stories for a variety of publications for both print and online mediums. In 2016, she was selected for a fellowship through the National Newspaper Publisher’s Association (NNPA) in their “Discover the Unexpected” program where she was able to work with the Chicago Defender for the summer. During that summer, she covered the anti-Trump protests at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

After her junior year at Howard, she was selected to be one of 24 American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) interns and spent her summer working with Smithsonian Magazine. There, she was able to fact-check several stories for the print publication and copy edit many stories for the web.

During Briahnna’s time at Howard University, she wrote for various publications, including the campus newspaper, The Hilltop, as well as 101 Magazine, where she also served as the Arts & Culture editor. During her junior and senior year, she wrote for the official university alumni publication, Howard Magazine.
